COMMUNITY MINISTRIES
Thank you for taking a look at the ministries we have at Church of the Holy Spirit. It is because of our dedicated volunteers and the commitment of our ministry coordinators that our parish family truly becomes the "Body of Christ".
If you are interested in more information about any of these ministries, groups or programs please call the parish office at 480-838-7474. You may also use the online form to let us know what ministries you're interested in and you will be contacted.
Active ministers who have been given accounts for online ministry scheduling can visit Ministry Scheduler Pro to access their current schedule.
Adoration Ministry
"Visit the Lord in the 'heart to heart' contact that is Eucharistic adoration" (Pope John Paul II). This ministry is actively engaged in Eucharistic adoration each Friday (9:00AM - 7:00PM) in the Blessed Sacrament chapel. One hour, or even one half hour, of adoration is requested.
Altar Servers
Altar servers have the privilege of assisting the priest in the sanctuary during the Mass and other liturgical functions. Anyone interested in becoming an altar server is eligible if they have made his/her First Communion.
Altar Society
The Altar Society has the responsibility of maintaining the linens used during Mass. It is a responsibility that is very flexible. The linens are laundered and ironed once a week. They are picked up in the Sacristy on Mondays and returned by Friday. Each person takes a month at a time, two to three times a year, scheduling is flexible and done for your convenience.
Andre House
Preparing and serving food to the homeless in downtown Phoenix is the mission of Andre House volunteers from Holy Spirit Church every Saturday from 3-7PM. Rotating teams assist in this work of mercy once a month or every other month. Volunteers share community while preparing meals for about 500 homeless guests. Many people volunteer during winter months, but help is needed especially during the summer months.
Art & Environment
This creative group provides the color, symbols, and nuances of the liturgical seasons. Ordinary Time, Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter all have different emphases. This ministry calls on artists, those with sewing skills, ladder climbers, carpenters, flower arrangers, and just about any other skill one can name. Certain seasons are busier than others. Groups are formed for certain tasks, such as during Holy Week when the environment changes three days in a row. This is a ministry for creative minds and hands.
Bingo
Bingo is played at Holy Spirit every Friday night with a few exceptions, from 6:30-10:00PM. Five teams of seven to ten volunteers make up this ministry. Each team assists once a month for about three hours. Workers tend to have as much fun as the players.
Cleaning Society
The Cleaning Society is looking for a few good women or men. If you feel a calling to help keep the church clean and orderly, this may be just for you. The group dusts, vacuums the church/chapel and sacristy, cares for the sacred vessels, and cleans the fingerprints from the glass in the church. There is nothing strenuous about this ministry. It is a group of parishioners who donate one to two hours of their time once a month.
Cursillo Movement
The Cursillo Movement approaches evangelization as a natural act of being Christ-like in our daily activities. While most people would like to live their lives in a Christ-like manner, the pressures of the world often make this difficult. The Cursillo Movement provides a method and a technique to provide each of us with the tools, the mentality, the strength, and the support to make this natural type of evangelization possible. Please go to the Holy Spirit Cursillo Movement web page for more information.
Donut Rangers
This dynamic group has a smile for everyone after the 7, 9, and 11AM Masses on Sundays year round. The service requirement depends on the number of available volunteers willing to serve coffee and donuts. This ministry of hospitality is an activity that will have you meeting new people almost instantly.
Eucharistic Ministry
Becoming a Eucharistic Minister entails reverently serving the Body and Blood of Christ to the community of Holy Spirit during Mass. The commitment is approximately twice a month at the Saturday vigil or Sunday Masses. Training requires one to two sessions for a total of about four hours, involving theological background and the basics of serving the Eucharist.
Finance Council
Finance Council is a twelve-member ministry, charged with overseeing the financial operations of the parish. Parishioners with backgrounds in finance, accounting, real estate, banking, and so forth, who might be interested in this ministry, are encouraged to present their credentials to the pastor. Membership on this committee is at the pastor's invitation. The term of service is typically three years.
Grocery Certificate Program
Fund-raising is an ongoing activity in any non-profit organization, and the church is no exception. A painless way for parishioners to participate in raising money for parish projects is for them to purchase and use grocery certificates and cards sold after the weekend Masses and available at the parish office. These are used just as cash in the stores at no extra cost to participants.
Lectors
Proclaim the Good News! When the Scriptures are read in the church, it is Christ himself who speaks. This is an important ministry, which requires a strong voice and a commitment to the Word. Lectors assist at all Masses and at other special liturgical services. Lectors are scheduled on a regular basis, but there are opportunities to volunteer for extra services. There is a training session required and a yearly renewal.
Ministers of Care
Eucharisitic Ministers to the Homebound are trained to bring the Eucharist to people in care facilities or private homes or to anyone recuperating from illness or surgery. Ministers of Care provide the Eucharist to care facilities each Sunday or once during the week.
Funeral groups serve luncheons for the bereaved family as requested following a funeral. This ministry also includes greeters for funerals, food providers for the receptions and callers who contact our parish members.
Music Ministry
Music ministry is a wonderful outlet for voices and instruments to raise prayer to new levels. Many styles of music are utilized in worship at Holy Spirit - contemporary, traditional, chant, classical, gospel, and some with heavy percussion.
You do not need to read music to be in a choir, but it does help. If you like to sing. A good place to start is with the adult choir or teen choir. There are also other groups if you have more experience. An audition may be required. A seasonal children's choir sings for Christmas and a few other times during the year. All types of instruments are welcomed, but reading music is necessary for instrumentalists. Some sight–reading is required.
Office Volunteers
This ministry is looking for anyone interested in helping out with office duties: with bulk mailings, reception, clerical filing, and ten key calculator use. No computer knowledge is necessary.

Rosary Ministry
This ministry is dedicated to praying the rosary every day to cover our parish, our priests and religious in prayer. Select a date of the month that you will pray the rosary and stay true to your commitment. That's all! No meetings or obligations.
Shawl Ministry
Care and the love of knitting (and crochet) have been combined into this prayerful ministry that reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace. Many blessings are knitted/crocheted into every item (ex. Shawl, prayer cloth or lap cloth). The knitter begins each shawl with prayers for the recipient. Intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. Upon completion of each shawl, prayer cloth, or lap cloth, the item is then blessed by Fr. Thomas J. Hallsten, KHS.
If you have ever knitted or crocheted it will come back to you quickly. We can teach beginners. Our Shawl Ministry meets every Friday morning at 9:30 in room 9. Please join us. Your hands, hearts, hooks and needles are welcome!
