Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus—First Fridays
by Fr. Long Phi Nguyen, SVD | 07/27/2025 | Updates from the PastorBeginning in August 2025, our community will begin a monthly Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus during our regular 8:00 AM Mass on the first Friday of each month. I warmly invite you to come and join us in prayer and worship as we honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
This devotion is especially meaningful to me as a member of the congregation of Divine Word Missionaries, founded by St. Arnold Janssen, who had a deep and enduring love for the Sacred Heart.
His prayer, which we continue to recite daily, expresses the heart of our mission:
“May the Triune God live in our hearts and in the heart of all.”
Through this devotion, we seek to grow closer to Jesus, to learn from his heart, and to be transformed so that our own hearts may reflect his love for God and for one another.
The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is rooted in one of the twelve promises Our Lord made to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque: “I promise thee, in the excess of the mercy of My Heart, that Its all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Communion on the First Friday of every month, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final penitence, and that they shall not die under My displeasure, nor without receiving the Sacraments, and My Heart shall be their secure refuge at that last hour.”
The Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart
- I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life.
- I will establish peace in their families.
- I will console them in all their afflictions.
- I will be their assured refuge in life, and more especially at death.
- I will pour out abundant benedictions on all their undertakings.
- Sinners shall find in My Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.
- Tepid souls shall become fervent.
- Fervent souls shall advance rapidly to great perfection.
- I will bless the house in which the image of My Sacred Heart shall be exposed and honored.
- I will give to priests the gift of moving the most hardened hearts.
- Persons who propagate this devotion shall have their names inscribed in My Heart, never to be effaced from It.
- I promise thee, in the excess of the mercy of My Heart, that Its all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Communion on the First Friday of every month, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final penitence, and that they shall not die under My displeasure, nor without receiving the Sacraments, and My Heart shall be their secure refuge at that last hour.
